So...    just a point to note this will be on Blisteins so comments about standard shocks and lowering are already defunct..

my plan,
50mm drop on the rear
60mm drop on the front

rear, preferably on 21mm torsion bars with a 24mm arb,  but as an absolute minimum itll be a GTi 6 beam with the '6 20mm bars until stef or I can source some 21mm ones from an estate which I will fit later.

and front on some generic lowering springs whilst I save the pennies for a shiney set.

now my question..  50/60 is obviously quite low,  I am not massively worried about ride quality as its hard at the moment with the 50 profile tyres, and ideally I would like to get a set fo reasonable shod 16'' wheels on it anyway.

I have read some articles that suggest rear lower than front (ie 40front 50 rear) and others that have suggested front lower than rear (ie 60 front 50 rear), what experiences are there out there to back up each of those 2 ideas,  Is one better than the other every time or is it purely subjective.
Interested in this thread myself actually, as I am planning a 50mm rear / 40mm front. Replying mostly for advice from others, lol
personally no more than 30 rear with eibachs up front,
on mine I have b8 bilstein + Eibach springs on front with 21mm TB on std ARB with bilstein B4's

i believe this drops the front 30mm ive had the rear match with a slightly higher back-end
i can highly recommenced this setup over my previous lower back-end on 20mm TB's

the car now is a lot more stable into corners and less back twitchy
your standard ARB is a 24mm one from the GTi6 right cully?

I am leaning toward 40rear 30front, will need to get different springs for the front however..

STD gti6 runs 20mm t/b, 24mm rear arb

last of the estates had 21mTBs as do the Xsara VTS, ZX 16v
You want a bit of rake in it, about 10-15 mm seems to work without it making the rear too excitable.
I'd stay on 15s as they do handle better on them.
The beam on your DTurbo HDi should have been GTi spec Tose, assuming it was still original.
rear needs to be 10-15mm higher than front will level on load.

it is, 20mm bars and 24mm arb.
