Full Version: recommended BOSCH fuel pump for XUD7TE

Hello,
I am rebuilding a XUD7TE motor. Car will be used daily so modifications will be modest.
Now I am trying to choose the best fuel pump as I need to reseal the pump anyway. I have installed 190 bar injectors as recommended by the expert who rebuilt them for me.

Stock pump is VE 0 460 484 038. It has a 8 mm plunger. It has coolant driven cold start advance and coolant driven cold start rpm boost.
I could swap it to a 9 mm pump from XUD9 motor or any other motor. I could also swap only the pump head and keep stock body/camplate or build any other combination. Is there anything that should be considered?
Electronic parts do not scare me if it improves something or allows better tuning/ride quality/etc.

Please advise.

Stick a 494 pump in it off the 306 with 175 bar Bosch injectors in. Who recommended 190 bar??
I know for sure the injectors are for some Peugeot and of higher pressure than original XUD7TE 155 bar.
It might be the 175bar injectors and I might have misheard 190 bar... I'll check with him.

Mine looks like this. Externally identical, except for wax cold timing device on XUD7TE pump.

What about fitting 494 head to 484 pump? Are there any differences between those pumps internals? Is it worth keeping the coolant controlled cold-start advance device that is fitted on XUD7TE pump and not fitted on XUD9TE pump?
I don't run the coolant bit on my 494 pump. If you are going to swap heads out you may as well put a 10\11 mm on it. I would just use 494 with a few mods if its a daily though. More than enough if tuned right.
Thanks for your feedback. I ask about the head because I have two 1.8TD pumps and can get a 1.9TD head much cheaper than whole pump. But if 1.9TD pump is somewhat superior I'll get the whole thing.
Regarding cold start advance, here temperature can drop to -25C in winter...
If it gets that low just have the idle a little higher in winter if you don't want to run the stat thing. The pumps I don't think are any differently internally.
I am going to use my pump and put on a random (they all are the same, right?) 9 mm head on it to keep all the engine specific pump differences including the cold-start device. Will see how it goes.
Makes sense. Should be fine. Also look up gov mod. And lda grind in guides section.
My xud7 runs a 9mm. Soon be 10mm when the bigger blower is on.
Looking at those photos makes me really miss playing with XUD's and VE's Sad
I have obtained a 9 mm head and a 1.9D pump for spares.

I hesitate doing gov mod. 1.9D has stiffer gov springs: both intermediate and the long one that is shimmed. Specifications say it has 5100 max rpm vs 4800 rpm of 1.9TD. Maybe I could use the gov from 1.9D as an upgrade instead of shimming 1.9TD gov? Please advise. Is there anything else I should take from the 1.9D pump?

You can use either to be fair. I would personally shim whichever one you want. I shimmed mine made a big difference.

9 mm plunger does not fit the 1.8TD camplate: it has ~0.3 mm larger diameter. Does camplate go with the plunger/head assembly?

Edit: the 1.9D pump has a fitting camplate, but it also has multiple small surface rust spots on it. Not flash rust, but pits. I suppose, it is a fancy shaped scrap metal?
You can use the camplate that goes with the 1.9 Turbo engine should be stamped DE443 from memory.

Thanks for your input. I would if I had one. Local specialist says the surface is hardened and will fail if corroded. Seems that my donor pump is scarp metal.

What selection of camplates have you got that you can use? 1.8TD one - which is slightly different, IIRC the dowel is different?

If you're desperate, I can possibly get hold of one and send it to you if you're struggling to find one.

Thank you for your kind offer. I contacted the seller and he offered to let me keep the FUBAR pump and give me another 1.9TD pump from 1999 Xantia. Hopefully it will have what I need. I'll know what exact pump it is tomorrow when I'll get there.

1.8TD camplate does have different dowel and smaller inside diameter. Pump shaft is thinner as well. I wonder why are the 1.8TD pumps different? Economical reasons or something else?

Hopefully I'll have partially rusted 1.9D pump, 1.8TD pump and 1.9TD pump to pick parts from. I am going to use gov from 1.9D, camplate and plunger particulars from 1.9TD and everything else from 1.8TD. Is that a good idea?
Just use the 1.9td pump. Job done then.

I run a 306 9mm on my xud7, shimmed gov and ground pin. It's fine. Even with a bigger turbo.

Glad to hear it!

Interesting, I didn't know the XUD7 8mm pumps used the smaller shaft - it seems random as to whether they use the smaller shaft. A lot of VW pumps use the smaller shaft, it tends to go hand in hand with stronger return springs and a larger pump element (head).

As others have said, you can just use the XUD9TE pump, although it may be a later Xantia pump with the electronic advance mechanism, which won't work - need to see if it had a throttle position sensor and timing solenoid underneath the pump.

Circled is the throttle position sensor, there will also be 4 wires coming from underneath the pump for the timing actuator.
I've got a 11mm pump on my xud7 never had any trouble!
Thanks for your input. I have finally received the replacement pump. It is from late xantia and has throttle sensor and electric advance control as Ruan said it will. I have not yet opened it, but hopefully it will have a good quality camplate/plunger/head set.

Servicing Stop
So, I have finally rode in to the wild with my BX. I used 1.9d full load and intermediate load governor springs on stock gov. They are stiffer than XUD7TE ones and slightly rise max RPM. Idle spring is different so I kept XUD7TE. Used 1.9TD camplate and 9mm plunger instead of 8mm original.

Now it comes to setting timing. I tried setting 0,66 mm as per XUD7TE manual, but result was so retarded that I had lots of white smoke and rough idle. Because there is no access to measure static timing when everything is assembled I simply advanced the pump a few degrees on a running engine, but now have no idea how my timing looks like. At least smoke is gone, engine runs smoothly.
Is there a recommended dynamic timing value that I could set using strobe light? Pump is hybrid so I don't think I can use anything from manuals not to mention access issue.

Edit: I have found 12,5+-1 degrees at idle for Bosch fueled D8B engine (XUD9TF). Can I use this or should aim for something else?
