(PS. Between the DVLA's records and the data inputted by those scrapping the cars, the data is almost useless since most things are just under the "make-model" like Peugeot 306 rather than any meaningful like the exact spec or model type)

There is a place near Scunthorpe you can see from the M180 that has around 3000 of these cars just sat there.
That list shows a lot of scrap 306's and some makes and models have surprising numbers too
3 106 gtis, 2 205 gtis, 5 306 gtis and 2 absolute twats scrapped rallyes. I mean who the hell does that. Did they sit there thinking "wow my car is rare, bet it will appreciate in value in a few years. So let's scrap it for a grand off a nice focus"
What knobbers scrapped rallyes. I'd love to know what these people went out and bought. Infact I'd like their addresses so I could pop round and have words with them.

That's two rallye's under 'Rallye 16V' - there could have been more scrapped under just 'Peugeot 306'
A number of 106 and 205 rallye's are on there as well

There can't of been that many people with proper mk1/2 mexicos who didn't know what they were worth and scrapped them. I cant believe a dealer would of taken one either with the price of any 3dr escort being at least £5k for some chassis numbers a pile of rust and a v5

If they were already fuelling a Rallye they've probably gone for something better rather than a 99g/km eco shitbox.
This is the reason the scrappage scheme didn't work, great in principle, who'd turn down a definite £2k for a knackered saxo? But the people driving the knackered saxo's couldn't afford anything better even with £2k off the purchase price (remember even tiny shitty cars were about £6k new). So the people that benefitted were people that already had money and relatively nice cars....so the dirty, high emmisions ones are still on the road despite the scheme lol.

You're ignoring finance / PCP etc in that argument though Tom, and that's what I suspect many of the car purchased through the scrappage scheme were purchased on.
No, many people can't afford £8k outright for a new basic car, but they can usually afford £100 a month which is what you can get a basic city runabout like a 107 for. I'd suggest that's how the majority of new privately owned cars are bought these days, with people often doing little more than leasing a car for 3 years and replacing it with another that they'll lease for 3 years.
The rules of the scheme meant that it didn't actually matter if the car ran, only that it was MOT'd and that you'd owned it for a minimum period (2 years IIRC). My neighbour took advantage of it when his 307 lunched its engine, taking £2k for it as a trade in when it was pretty much worthless and bought a new Nissan that they paid via monthly finance.

If I was to bring the system back it would be for cars registered pre-2001 (51 plate) traded against a sub-120g pkm (£30 tax bracket) cars that must have been assembled in Britain. This gets old cars off the road, guarantees low emissions Eco boxes on the road and supports the car manufacturing industry in this country.
And at the same time I'd changed the pre-2001 tax rules. The 1549cc split would still apply to petrols but the split cc would be 1999cc on diesels (as 90% of old diesels are 1.9s but r still economical so should benefit from being only £140ish to tax).
Don't get so worked up, there's no indication of the condition of the car that was scrapped.
All the dealer required was a shell and V5.
Some jeb-ends did scrap perfectly good cars tho, there was a Golf Mk1 Clipper in a yard near me that had been scrapped - it was totally mint.
The cars had a damn good picking over tho, you were allowed to take anything except the shell - and all the scrappies knew when they get a good motor in because they'd strip it bare for parts.
