Me and a few friends have decided to buy 2-way radios for when were out driving and convoying.

But we've just been wondering if they are legal to use or not?
Im pretty sure they are, but wanted a second opinion as I cannot find any recent information. Im pretty sure some of you on here use them.
i would say they are classed the same as mobile phones
so let your passenger use them Wink
Not legal. Police officers aren't allowed to use a hand held radio while driving but using the push to talk button for the vehicle radio while driving is OK
We use the binatone lattitude 150, cheap but not too cheap and do the job, you can get earpieces for them which i presume would make them legal?
so basically mount it on your dash and hey presto its legal Big Grin
I use this setup. Works really well with about a 3km range on the country roads. Never been pulled over for using it, not that I'm endorsing its use on the highway at all..
Get CB radios, Theyre legal.

Don't you then have to have a stupid 6ft aerial on the roof with a huge magnet?
no you can get smaller ones now some of its pricey tho depending what your looking for
but it's a case of fitting it in the car etc etc

Well yea though a small 3ft will be more than enough for convoying. The magmount is handy to pop on and off as well.
I'd stick to walkie talkies personally.. much eaiser!
CB is easy, install it once and not worry about it, rather than have to be buying batteries or constantly charging walkie talkies with naff range.

CB's are better for convoy as you can still keep in touch if someone gets lost or takes a wrong turn and ends up miles away Smile Bit of microfibre cloth glued to the base of the magmount limits paintwork damage and CB's can easily be hidden in glovebox's / under dashboards and run off the ignition live for the stereo. what could be simpler?

Also works as communications in the event of a zombie apocalypse.... *runs off to panic buy CB radios*

Im not entirely sure thats true.

If you take the microphone piece in your hand to talk while driving I think Im right in saying you could be fined for that. Maybe DD will clarify
Wouldn't it be easier to use your mobile phone on a mount with bluetooth?
Problem is signal. Often mine drops out on the way to car meets, and it's a pain to have to keep dialling somebody to talk to them. Radio is quick and easy, just hit a button and go.
Ah ok, fair point.
Gotta say I am very tempted by a CB radio for shows, I know alot of the cornish lot have them.
Used two-way radios all the way round europe, if you're driving a normal car (ie not stripped out to f*ck) you can use a spider mount on the dash and hear/be heard just fine.
Won't be legal to hold it while driving mate, you could go all out and fit a vehicle version with hands free but it wouldn't be cheap

Best bet would be to have a mount on the dash and just press the button on the side

Company I work for do this stuff at business level so know a fair bit if you want any info about kit or law Smile
Midland 78 Cb radio with a mag mount and speaker wire to fag lighter,
also if you get lost/bored a few folk use them still Wink

So they're not legal?
It is technically legal it seems due to a small side law...however if seen using one whilst driving in certain situations you could be fined for driving without due care and attention...just like if you had a sandwich in ya hand!
So just depends if copper wants to be a bell end at the time?
To be honest if they're not legal I am writing to the BBC and personally giving Clarkson and crew 3 points and a 60quid fine

Haha I want to see the returned email degg! :-)
It's hand held mobile telephone or a hand held device, other than a two way radio, which performs an interactive communication function by transmitting and receiving data.
