Saw this on fb, makes it even more amazing it only weights 40kg immense power to weight ratio!
10hp per kilo! Epic piece of engineering. Wonder if it will last 150k...
That is pretty damn impressive, the question is how long will it last? It'll be a long time before that goes in a road car and lasts 100k+...
True it'll probably be a long time, but most cars are headed that way anyway.. most newer engines in road cars are all 1.6 turbo lumps, this is just the next step

From factory it is, I can't think of any more 1.5 T's that produce that power stock.

Absolutely mental. Makes you wonder what advancements we would have made if turbocharging hadn't been out-lawed from F1 in 89.
I reckon VNTs would have been around loads sooner. Remember helping my mate strap a turbo on his 1 litre Micra, think it was a T3, proper pikey job. Pulled 86bhp and then exploded spectacularly on the way home lol

It's a race engine, it's not going in a road car.
I didn't say it was..? That said, a fair amount of high tech from racing usually ends up eventually filtering down to road cars where it's applicable.. so it's not out of the question similar engines will be produced for road cars in the future (albeit probably less powerful to make it last longer)
It's a Lemans 24hr motor, it will only need to last 30 hours...
I am not surprised by this at all, as the wtcc cars and rally cars are now running 1.6 turbo units, so it was only a matter of time tbh, for the 1.4 to gain some serious power!

To be honest I'm not sure many roadgoing engines would last 30 hours at full tilt....

You get 300BHP from the old 13B-REW Rotary in the RX-7.

That 23 years ago from a 1.3 engine.

With a hell of a lot of ongoing issues though, like horrendous fuel and oil consumption and rebuilds every 40k though. Not to mention the lack of torque.
Fords 1 litre 3cylinder prodcues 300bhp in race form.

So, sorry, but 400bhp from a 1.5 is poor imo
The new Ford 1 litre engines are a very impressive engine IMO. The new focus has the option of one which a guy at work had as a hire car and for a 1 litre, it really did pull well!
HUGE leap forward those 1litre ecoboosts.

100 or 120bhp options in standard form on focus/fiesta.

Lots of potential. The engine block fits on a A4 piece of paper!

Oil consumption is pub bollocks, so is lack of torque....and rebuilds anywhere from 60-100k usually.
Just to point out though that 400bhp from a 1.5 isnt the new/amazing thing, its the size/weight and efficiency thats impressive

Well my mate had an RX-7, and it used a litre of oil every 1500-2000 miles, definitely didn't feel torquey either. And that was after a rebuild.

A lot of vauxhall 1.6/1.8/2.0s are DESIGNED to burn oil, manufacturer accept up to 1litre for each 1000 miles as.normal...
And some audi pd units expect up to 1/2 litre every 1000 as acceptable

And no, they are not all that torquey..

But 12000rpm is epic and thump a turbo on them and they are insane
Oh yeah, good engines, but flawed. Very flawed.
That v10 bmw engine we had drunk a litre every 600 miles...at least the rotary is designed to burn it on purpose...
The 1l eco boost is a seriously impressive bit of kit but that nissan lump makes some impressive steps forward. The lightness and diminutive size of the entire unit are impressive, gearbox aside, that is a similar size to the electric motors on milk floats. You could have one of those engines per wheel.

I'm a big fan of Hotpoint Washing Mach... Rotary engines, but they're hardly the best in the not drinking oil olympics, especially after having a bit of abuse from someone who doesn't know what they're doing...

And you couldn't hardly say they have "torque off idle"...

f*cking love the things, but gutsy, economic or intensely reliable aren't really words I'd use to describe one...

Also the way that their displacement is measured is bullshit also, yes it's displacement the face of the rotors for one stroke... But in reality you need to measure two faces of each, since effectively it's a double sided piston... It's output is really more comparable to a 2.6 litre 4 cylinder engine - a two rotor "1.3 litre" rotary consumes as much air/fuel as a 2.6 litre 4 cylinder would.at the same RPM.
