being able to flash the fog lamps with the main beam,
or high beam with fogs, then off on dip
this seams to be quite a good mod for country road driving.

Ive gone and done the mod myself
on my PH3 HDI and took a few pictures for you people


the fogs are still switched and used as normal but you have the option of fogs on with high beam or fogs on when flash high beam



remember this mod is not legal but with a switch to turn it off you are more in control when it comes MOT time



first off i armed myself with

Diode

switch

heat shrink

wire

electrical tape

soldering iron

and the electrical drawing

and tools





first thing was to work out what i was going to do and where to connect the diode and switch
i decided to do all the connections inside the steering

column cowling


this is a drawing of the additional circuit added







had to remove the cowling to expose the plug on the back of the light stalk

i metered out the cables to work out what was what and working out where to connect my circuit


thin brown wire go's to the headlight high beam
thin red wire go's to the fog lamp relay trigger


stripping back the cables soldering in my new wires and mocking up the install to test







after testing to make sure the diode was the correct way round the circuit was installed and insulated up

once insulated it was time to mount the switch into the cowling







then its a matter of refitting all the cowls

and the final test

Do you know if the wire colours are the same on the phase 1, ie, brown for main beam and red for fog light. I'm guessing that the relay is in the same place for the fogs as I was thinking of tapping in to the back of that to save running cable behind the heater controls etc.

What a Fantastic modification, Very useful and well described. I will definately be doing this to my Gti6. I like the switch that you used aswell, it looks factory fitted.

this is probably a silly question.... but what diode do you use ? :oops: there are loads to choose from !!

cant find this one in maplins

but a 1N4001 or 1N4002 or 3/4 will do

the diode is the main part of this mod but aslong as it is a rectifier diode you cant go wrong

Want to do this on phase 1

Is it the same

No because the fog switch is in the centre console. The same principle applies though, I'm sure I saw this done on a phase 1 before.

principle would just be the same find out what wire triggers the foglight relay and thats it surely??

will work the same if the PH1 has a foglight relay "yes"

just need to trck down the correct wire on the relay

Cully, on the panel with the passenger airbag switch on your car is there a round blank next to it or a lock out switch for the rear windows?

If there is a blank you could replace it with a front fog light switch from a ph1 to activate the new function, this way it'll keep everything looking OEM. It'll also light up with the illumination if wired correctly.

This is the guide i used when i did both my 1.4 and my DT, love this mod...so simple, and so effective! I'll even rep you for it again cully!

yeh i think you can use one of the button switches like this. IIrc it might be the rear window heater switch. Wait for someone else to confirm that though!

You say about the polarity of the diode, is the picture above showing it correctly, with the negative side of the diode going towards the foglight relay?

I plan to do this at the weekend if I get the chance!

yes picture is wired correct

Very good! Diodes are bringing gcse technology flooding back!

Colour variation on my Y-plate, the high beam wire is grey instead of red...



Works all the same obv.

Has no one realised yet that the colour codes basically mean sod all? Its all done by numbers on pugs

yes i know that!
and even the numbers vary between the same year/model

The colours only change now and again though. if youre lucky doing it with colours is really helpful! Especially if your numbers have rubbed off your wires!

Can this be used to wire up these with main beams..?

works exactly the same, just go to the relay for the new lamps and you're fine

EDIT: if you only want to switch them on together with the main beams you can forget the diode

bumpy bump just for piggy

i have done this mod to my Gti6 too it lights up the road so much more now on a late night Bwarp!

If the diode isn't there, when you turn the fog lights on in actual foggy use, it will back feed and turn on the high beam.
