They're meant to be free as free to turn by hand. It's very common for them to seize up. You'll struggle to overheat a hdi unless sat in traffic for an age at which point turn the car off. I'd buy two...

Welcome along. What year is the motor? some of the hdi engines had a fuel check valve thing on them that causes a buzzing sound. Some didnt. Not really sure why they ever had them to be honest though....

Thy all came out if factory metal. Plastic was cheap nasty aftermarket ones. You may also want to replace the sensor if it's rubbed in it.
