16v TU Cam Ladder / Rocker Cover Sealant.... - darrenjlobb - 13-01-2015

Hi guys,

Got a random question, but its something that over time is driving me rather crazy! The J4 motor in my daily VTS/106 GTI 16v engine) just LOVES spewing oil out the top end...from both the rocker cover seals, and also between the head and camladder...I am running later JP4 plastic covers with rubber o rings, plus sealant to no avail...

I have tried every type of silicon / gasket goop I have access to here / locally, and nothing seems to seal it up..

Does anyone know a trick? As im sick of it spewing all all down over the block / bell housing! Ive had to change one clutch due to it already!

Have you tried running a bead of sealant on the cam ladder and leaving it to dry then torquing it down? Ive found this is the only way to get RS cam covers to seal once the built in seal has had its day!

a lot of the guys over on the axoc had this problem, one of the only ways they found was to get the proper stuff from citroen / peugeot, and do as niall put, a tiny bead on the surfaces and let it dry, torque it down

given your setup on there already, I can only recommend replacing the gaskets.

loctite 5910 is what peugeot/citroen use on the ladders iirc.

I have already replaced the gaskets for genuine pug, and they still leak.... Is 5910 black? From what ive noticed "stock" motors seem to have a black type, which is very hard to get off..IE likely what i need!

yup it is black, off the shelf in halfords too!

very odd the covers leak with new gaskets, are you using the correct bolts?

RE: 16v TU Cam Ladder / Rocker Cover Sealant.... - darrenjlobb - 13-01-2015

Hm I think so? There the bolts that came with the engine...TORX on the inside endge, and bolt heads on the outside edges?

The biggest issue is the oil leaks down into the plug holes, and also into the bell housing, which causes even more issues, and nothing annoys me more than a oil leak!

I take it from experience these covers shouldnt leak then with proper seals?

EDIT, really I should stop pissing around with this stupid little petrol and man up, but either way this needs to be my daily as it is, and this issue is rather annoying...

ah, the bolts for the plastic covers are different, they're 10mm hex with shouldered heads, 23mm long, got them on the rally car I service for and its dry as a bone in there, Sandy did comment that they do leak with the wrong bolts.

part number 0250 74, 11p each, you need 16.

we had a bit of a leak and oil use issue with the old car which led to an engine bay fire! that one had the alloy covers.

Ah, this is interesting, this is most likely what my problem is! Thanks, will get myself some correct bolts!

Dont suppose you have the number for the seals do you? As if im taking it apart again I think id rather replace those seals again...as there covered in all kinds of sealant etc now!

Dont even bother with the bolts, just build your xud again and accept that it leaks Wink
