Another ''Not a 306''... Warning: Deutscher - samass - 01-02-2012

So many of you will have seen this wonderful 'Rocco up for sale recently, and I'm the lucky guy that drove, I mean, legally transported, it the 140 miles home! And goddamn, it looks good on my drive!

Its a '90 VW Scirocco GT2 in Alpine White. Its got 113k on the clocks, and a 1.8 carbed engine, and I paid 300 of my not-so-hard earned pounds for it, with no tax, and no MOT.

This is her after a quick shampoo

As you can imagine, a 21 and a bit year old car would need a bit of tlc...
I'll start from the out and work in...

Bodywork isnt too bad, a few little speckles of surface rust, a bit of yellowing of the white on the bonnet, dent in N/S wing, broken N/S wing mirror cap, crack headlight and fog light, and a couple of spots where the paint has a cracked and some rust is trying to poke through, blue (yes, blue) side repeaters, and a silly bonnet scoop. in black. Nothing a bit of forum trawling and elbow grease wont fix.

Engine, notice anything wrong with this picture?

On top of the blue in random places, it doesn't quite run right, runs a bit lean, cuts out unless the choke is all the way out, dies when you're not rolling in gear, things like that. Otherwise, pulls really very well, alllllmost as good as the 306! probably just me tho...

Interior, bit tired, drivers seat is shagged as you can see;

There's a few things missing from inside, lights, sunroof mechanism, and the door pins were horrible blue metal things before I switched them over. pretty much just needs new seats and a nice clean and it'll be all good. Oh and the starter button that's been bodged in need's to be gotten rid of.

There's loads of other little things that need to be seen too, but I really can't be arsed to list them all, and I'm sure it'd just bore you lot.

Here's another picture to end off the first post!

You can even see my 306 in the background... maybe I should do a thread about that too...

Re: Another ''Not a 306''... Warning: Deutscher - Ian - 01-02-2012

Lovely retro ride. good luck.

Re: Another ''Not a 306''... Warning: Deutscher - samass - 01-02-2012

cheers guys

took the carb off today to replace the rubber mount, turns out its already got a weber on it, massive bonus!
gunna pick up some thinners and clean it all up and check the jets are the right size before i bolt it all back on

Re: Another ''Not a 306''... Warning: Deutscher - Moonstone2.0 - 01-02-2012

My old neighbour had one and they are epic! Very good pull as well! roars like a lioness on fire!

Re: Another ''Not a 306''... Warning: Deutscher - MrsMoonstone - 02-02-2012

My Mum and Dad had one when they were new... In metallic grey or sth like that... Had a T2 VW Camper at the same time - my cool hippie parents! Wink

Re: Another ''Not a 306''... Warning: Deutscher - Foxy-jim - 02-02-2012

Get some twin 40's on it!

Re: Another ''Not a 306''... Warning: Deutscher - samass - 02-02-2012

haha if only i could afford twin 40s.... it already pulls really well with the 34 on it... christ, itd shift!
the carb is currently sitting in some paraffin to clean it all up before i stick it back on the car anyway. christ its cold outside! lost all feeling in my fingers while scrubbing it!

Re: Another ''Not a 306''... Warning: Deutscher - kingy - 03-02-2012

slam it on bandeds. he he.
not bad for a £300 project.

Re: Another ''Not a 306''... Warning: Deutscher - samass - 05-02-2012

been at it again, freezing my fingertips off working away.
just little things, but slow and steady progress is better than nowt. new accelerator cable and some new fuel lines, with some shiney new fuel line clips replacing rusty old jubilee clips.

haha that would be awesome! at the moment its just a 'get it back to a good, standard condition' seeing as i can afford to restore, rather than mod!

Re: Another ''Not a 306''... Warning: Deutscher - Foxy-jim - 05-02-2012

You going to respray it?

Another ''Not a 306''... Warning: Deutscher - THE_Liam - 05-02-2012

Good project that, was tempted myself. I'd have had it myself if it was injection, makes swapping in an ABF much easier Smile

Re: Another ''Not a 306''... Warning: Deutscher - samass - 05-02-2012

Foxy-jim Wrote:You going to respray it?

not sure yet, gunna mop it first and see how it comes up, might be able to get away without a respray for now

THE_Liam Wrote:Good project that, was tempted myself. I'd have had it myself if it was injection, makes swapping in an ABF much easier Smile

'scuse my noobness... but... ABF?

Re: Another ''Not a 306''... Warning: Deutscher - THE_Liam - 05-02-2012

It's the 2 litre 16 valve engine from a mk3 Golf GTI 16 valve, 150 bhp, very strong, epic tuning potential. It'll drop straight into a Scirocco on the original mounts, and if it's an injection car it's plug and play. With a carb car there's some wiring to do...

Re: Another ''Not a 306''... Warning: Deutscher - samass - 05-02-2012

ahhhh gotcha

i was toying with the idea of dropping something more interesting into it, but decided i dont really have the funds or the time to do it.

the 1.8 will benefit from a good service and will probably do me for a bit. i thiiiink it can keep up with my 306, if the 306 has a boot full of shit, as is the norm...

Re: Another ''Not a 306''... Warning: Deutscher - THE_Liam - 05-02-2012

A few tips, speaking from someone who's had a few older cars Smile

1. Go through it with a fine tooth comb, and treat any emerging rust. Don't just leave it unless you can MIG weld.
2. Remove the carb, dismantle it, clean and rebuild it, re-fit it with new gaskets and air filter and then take it to a carb specialist for a tune-up, it'll make a huge difference!
3. Don't get disheartened if you have a few problems, it's an old car so it's inevitable, and old cars are easy to fix.
4. Change the brake fluid. You wouldn't believe how many old cars have gone 10+ years without a fluid change.

Most importantly, enjoy it Smile

thanks for that man, really helpful!

that was pretty much my intention, there are a few patches of surface rust around, nothing too major, but i havent had it up to have a good poke around underneath as yet, im waiting for a bit warmer, and drier weather first haha

i had the carb off and new gaskets fitted, cleaned it all up, didnt dismantle it tho, ill see how it runs after that, and then may take it apart and rebuild it if its not great, and have a fiddle to get it running as best it can.

yeah true, im deffo expecting more than a few issues, but its off the road so ive plenty time to have to sort it all, the 306 is still my daily.

ah yes, that will deffo be getting done, and the brakes in general willl be made sure that theyre all good. they are really firm, but preety ineffective, but i think thats a standard thing with these, so ill fiddle around and make sure its all good.

oh i surely do enjoy it! even tho im not driving it, everytime i step outside and see it it makes me smile, and im always wanting to go out and fix things on it, even tho i risk frost bite!

I LOVE how simple this car is to work on, only one bolt that holds the seat in, ONE BOLT!

Re: Another ''Not a 306''... Warning: Deutscher - Foxy-jim - 25-02-2012

Have you just taken the seat out?

Re: Another ''Not a 306''... Warning: Deutscher - samass - 25-02-2012

haha yep, started stripping it down to repair the bolster, but i didnt get a ic of that, will get one later

Re: Another ''Not a 306''... Warning: Deutscher - Foxy-jim - 25-02-2012

Ah right fair enough! Are you planning on keeping this or fixing up then selling?
